ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis independent comic book community is rallying the troops for Kansas City’s Planet Comicon.
Stache Publishing has organized a way to positively showcase St. Louis comic creators at the popular convention. STL Row is a new section in Artist Alley featuring St. Louis comic creators, collaborators, artists and writers.
St. Louis comic creators have big ambitions and big talent. Word got around and it didn’t take long for these groups to connect with one another. “It’s especially nice if we can coordinate our efforts when we travel to cons, to continue fostering that sense of community and camaraderie,” says Ink & Drink co-editor, Steve Higgins.
Ink and Drink, an anthology publisher based in St. Louis, has been bringing creative people together for years by allowing comic creators to contribute short stories to regularly published anthologies. “One of the great things about St. Louis is the way its comics community thrives so well.” Higgins states, “at Ink and Drink we really try to pull the community together in some ways.”
Ink and Drink brings a portion of local comic talent together in each publication, including independent freelancers. “The St. Louis comic community is a very ‘indie’ thing.” Joe Wills explains, “There are a lot of very talented artists and writers doing their own thing and doing it well, and yet they are very supportive of one another.”
Willis has contributed to a number of Ink & Drink anthologies and is tabling in STL Row with fellow St. Louis artist, Brian Atkins. “I’m proud to be a part of something that seems to be growing and evolving in a supposedly dying [comic book] industry,” said Willis. “I think the STL Row at Planet Comicon is a brilliant idea. It will be filled to the brim with passionate and talented creators dedicated to telling great stories and getting unique voices heard. It’s going to be a blast!”
The community provides support for artists and writers just getting into comics. Joining this year is multi-media journalist and true-crime writer Seth Ferranti. “I’m looking forward to attending my first comicon ever as I make the transition into comics,” said Ferranti. The writer is working on a comic adaptation of his true-crime saga The Supreme Team with Stache Publishing.
Stache started in the Metro East St. Louis area as a small group of comic book creators gathering every week to learn to make comics. Three years later, Stache has grown into a small press publisher with contributors from all over the globe, many from St. Louis.
Community among comic creators is an important part of success and artistic development. Other St. Louis comic creators attending Planet Comicon include: New Haven Comics, Ellis Ray III, Headmetal Comics, Jesse Kwe, Ben Sawyer, Rori Comics, and more.
STL Row is located in the 1200 row in Artist Alley. Stache Publishing can be found at tables 1236 and 1238. Planet Comicon is being held at Bartle Hall, in the Kansas City Convention Center on 301 W 13th St, Kansas City, MO on the weekend of March 13-15, 2015.
